AFRICA DAY 2022

Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organization of African Unity on 25th May 1963 which later on led to the now known Africa Union on 9th July 2002 in Durban South Africa.The Conference called for the founding of an African Freedom Day, a day to « …mark each year the onward progress of the liberation movement, and to symbolise the determination of the people of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation. » It is celebrated by a number of countries in Africa.

Africa day celebration

Africa Day continues to be celebrated both in Africa and around the world, mostly on 25 May with the Africa Union designating a theme for every year celebration. This year’s theme is “Strengthening Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on The African Continent: Strengthening Agro-Food Systems, Health and Social Protection Systems for the Acceleration of Human, Social and Economic Capital Development.”

During the launch of the 2022 African month the African Union Theme for 2022 Statement by Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission H.E Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa said AU theme of year for 2022 aims to maintain a strong political momentum on nutrition across the African continent. It is a unique opportunity to strengthen continental commitment to end malnutrition in all its forms and to further improve food and security through the implementation of Malabo Commitments and the goals and objectives of the Africa Regional Nutrition Strategy (2016-2025).

How to celebrate Africa day

Africa Day was marked over six decades ago and has continued to be a phenomenal commemoration in Africa and around the globe. It is usually marked by festivals, concerts and speeches. But, beyond the colourful festivities, what’s the point? According to the Africa Union designated themes there is need for Africans to contemplate on issues that were ideally from the founding fathers. That of Stirling African away from colonial power interference and neo-colonialism, Learning and practicing African cultures and heritage. In relation to this year’s theme on nutrition, African ought to be proud of the indigenous food and embrace the African foodways. We wish every African a happy Africa Day 2022.
